Assisted living bridges the gap between independent living housing and 24hr professional nursing care. For one monthly cost, residents enjoy a beautiful spacious suite, easy access to many superior amenities and the comfort of knowing that both scheduled and unscheduled personal assistance is available 24hrs a day.
Assisted Living housing can be purchased privately or accessed through the Independent Living BC (ILBC) Assisted Living program, which offers housing, hospitality services and personal assistance to adults who can live independently but require regular help with daily activities. The Independent Living BC (ILBC) Assisted Living program is administered through the Interior Health Authority and BC Housing, while its services are delivered by Golden Life Management.
Assisted living facilities are registered under the BC Ministry of Health “Assisted Living Registrar”. The mandate of the registrar is to protect the health and safety of assisted living residents. To meet this mandate, the registrar administers and enforces safety standards, policies, and procedures drafted and supported by BC Ministry of Health
Many of our seniors housing communities offer assisted living housing in conjunction with independent living housing to eliminate the need for residents to move if they require additional personal care.
Core Principals
The core principles of assisted living include choice, privacy, independence, individuality, dignity and respect. It recognizes that even when seniors require more assistance with daily living, they have the right to manage their own lives, based on their own choices and lifestyle.

Admittance Criteria
Generally speaking, representatives from Interior Health Authority and BC Housing’ use the following criteria to screen assisted living applicants for acceptance into the program:
Applicants must require a combination of accommodation, hospitality services, and personal care services.
Applicants must be able to make decisions on their own behalf or have assistance to do so (e.g. A spouse living with them).
Applicants must be able to respond appropriately if there is an emergency.
Residents are considered to be unsuitable for an assisted living residence when they no longer meet the prerequisites listed above, or if their needs exceed the level of services provided in the assisted living residence.
Fee Structure
Assisted living housing, hospitality and services are purchased for one inclusive monthly fee, which is either paid in full by the resident or subsidized by the Independent Living BC (ILBC) Assisted Living program.
Interior Health Authority representatives refer successful assisted living applicants to specific residences within the region. Under the assisted living program, residents pay 70 percent of their net income toward housing, hospitality and services, as outlined above. Applicants are required to take an income assessment to determine their monthly fee.
What is Independent Living?
Independent Living, also known as supportive housing, is designed for seniors who want a safe, rewarding and independent lifestyle, without the responsibilities of home maintenance. It suits seniors who are relatively independent, but need or want a variety of services to support their continued independent lifestyle.
Core Principals
All seniors, regardless of their age, deserve the opportunity to live independently, enjoy the freedom of retirement and maintain their ties with friends and family. For many, this means the choice to end spending time and money maintaining their private residence and letting someone else take on those responsibilities.
With the freedom to do what they want – when they want – many seniors enjoy new activities, regain interest in hobbies and spend more time with loved ones. And, with the support of Golden Life Management’s hospitality and personalized support services, they can feel secure knowing that their needs will be met if their circumstances change.
Housing, Hospitality and Services
Independent living delivers housing and hospitality programs that focus on accessibility, safety, convenience and support services that continue to enhance residents’ independence.
Hospitality services include:
Nutritious meals
Housekeeping services
Laundry services, on request
Social and recreational activities
Scheduled transportation

Individually controlled heat and air-conditioning
All utilities, including electricity, heat, air-conditioning, water, sewer and garbage

What is the social model of care?
The Social Model of Care is a holistic approach that considers the individual’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs, while providing care.
The aging process in itself is neither an illness nor a medical condition. The social model accepts and adapts to the individual’s functional abilities, personal desires, life experiences, and health needs, respects individual differences, promotes individual choice and focuses on strength and wellness.
In the social model, residents are treated as people, not as patients. At Golden Life, staff take the time to know their residents. They support resident’s choices for all services, care options and other functions of daily life. They encourage the independence of residents as respected individuals within the community of care.
